 Zoom image		In 1454 the Grimaldi family acquired Monaco, gaining independence in 1489, it has remained a Dukedom ever since. A treaty drawn in 1918 grants the tiny State to the Grimaldi Family until there are no more heirs.

The Grimaldi family Coat of Arms is topped by an eight Arched Duchal Crown which became Monaco's symbol of Sovereignty.
